Emotional Intelligence in Education


            This paper discusses the concept of emotional intelligence, its constructs, and underlying competencies. It also goes further to point out how emotional intelligence has affected the learning environment, the instructor, and the instructor-student relationship.It also compares the performance of instructors with a high level of emotional intelligence and those with a low level of emotional intelligence. Moreover, this paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of having emotionally intelligent instructors.


Emotional Intelligence Constructs and Competencies

Emotional intelligence is made up of four domains which include social awareness, self-awareness, relationship management and self-management. It also has underlying competencies which are not inborn, but rather, learned over time and which uniquely contribute to making a leader more efficient in their work (Goleman, Boyatis and McKee, 2013). These are important factors that help leaders inspire their followers towards achieve the stipulated goals.

Self-awareness refers to a situation where an individual is able to understand their emotions, strengths and weaknesses and also their values and motives (Goleman, Boyatis and McKee, 2013). The easiest way to know that a person is self-aware is that they take their time to meditate and think about everything they do.This helps them in coming to terms with themselves and their actions. Once people are aware of themselves, they become more rational and realistic in most things that they do. They also know what their goals are and why they have to achieve them. 

Self-management, on the other hand, refers to a focused determination that leaders need to achieve their goals (Goleman, Boyatis and McKee, 2013). It helps people in controlling their emotions so that they do not control their actions. Leaders are required to make clear judgments. Whenever emotions such as anger and panic take control of leaders, they find it hard to focus their energy into making clear and rational judgments.Self-management helps in containing the emotions of followers since the emotions of the leader tend to affect those of followers. If a leader panics in a situation, his/her followers may also panic leading to poor performance at the workplace. In addition, a leader can create an environment of trust, fairness and comfort in the organization depending on how they are able to control their emotions and impulses.

Social awareness can also be described in terms of empathy, which is the ability to read someone’s face or voice and know how they feel during a conversation (Goleman, Boyatis and McKee, 2013). A leader can use social awareness to connect with their followers and to pass messages in a way that moves the followers. It also helps a leader in driving resonance. Where the leader has social awareness, he or she is able to understand how people feel at the moment and act accordingly. This will make followers feel that their leader cares about them hence the leader will receive a positive reactions. This in turn creates a good working environment hence achievement of the set goals. Leaders should therefore be keen on understanding how their followers feel so that they can act or say appropriate and relevant things.

Relationship management helps in controlling followers’ emotions (Goleman, Boyatis and McKee,2013). For a leader to be able to manage relationships well, they have to be self-aware, empathetic, self-manageable, friendly and authentic. Authenticity is manifested whenever a leader acts from their genuine emotional state. In the event that leaders fail to be authentic in their dealings, followers can easily notice and may lead to mistrust between the leader and follower.

Importance of Emotional Intelligence for Leadership Development

Executive leadership creates organizations that have a high motivation to perform (Hasselbein and Goldsmith, 2006). Therefore, development of leaders rather than managers is important because this move yields productive people who are able to help in increasing the performance of an institution or organization.Emotional intelligence is a key distinguishing factor for outstanding leaders (Harvard Business Review, 2015).


When it comes to exercising leadership, a self-aware leader can manage his/her emotions and relationships are likely to lead his or her followers better than one who cannot understand and control emotions. A leader who has developed their leadership skills through mastering emotional intelligence will be distinguished from the rest through their ability to lead(Hasselbein and Goldsmith, 2006). Their leadership will be more successful because they can manage relationships and emotions to help them and their followers in achieving their goals.

Is Emotional intelligence (EI) is an Important Requirement for Leadership Success in Education?

The successful of any institution is determined by numerous factors. Some of these factors include diversity in teams, balancing of different strengths and weaknesses in a team, and dedication to work (Rath and Conchie, 2008). In addition, the quality of the leader also influences the success of the team or institution(Rath and Conchie, 2008). An emotionally intelligent leader is able to lead an educational institution much better compared to a leader who lacks emotional intelligence. However, since the success of the institution does not only depend on the type of the leader, emotional intelligence is not important leadership success in the education industry.

Effect of Emotional Intelligence to the Learning Environment

Emotional Intelligence affects the learning environment, the instructor, and the instructor-student relationship. When the level of emotional intelligence is high, a climate of information-sharing, learning, healthy risk-taking flourishes. In contrast, dearth of emotional intelligence leads to an environment that is characterized by anxiety and fear (Harvard Business Review, 2015). The learning environment will be conducive for learning if there are high levels of emotional intelligence compared to when they are low. This is because information will flow easily through the entire institution.

The instructor student relationship becomes that of trust where there is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence brings about transparency in the actions of a leader and that of the follower. Where the students trust the information given by their teachers and the teachers trust the students to behave accordingly creates a peaceful environment that is conducive for learning. Moreover, emotional intelligence drives performance from the top level to the bottom level of the institution. The performance of the instructor is greatly influenced by how they relate with their students.

Pros and Cons of Developing an Emotionally Intelligent Instructor.

            An emotionally intelligent instructor can control his or her emotions. He or she can also manage their emotions and in turn manage those of the students. In addition, such an instructor is able to understand the how the students feel about a certain situation and act or speak in a way that will show the students’ feelings and opinions matter. This will foster understanding and good relationship between the instructors and the students. However, some instructors may use their knowledge in emotional intelligence to manipulate others. For instance, they may falsify emotionsto make students act in a certain manner.

Effect of Utilization of EI to the Future of the Education Industry

The use of emotional intelligence will change the future in the education industry. This will be experienced through the leadership of education institutions, the relationship between the instructors and the students and also the entire learning environment. High levels of emotional intelligence tend to create an environment that is conducive for learning and also bring trust and transparency in the institution. More people will therefore be encouraged to use emotional intelligence in the education sector hence major bring improvements in the education industry.

Connections between EI and the Development of Training

            Training is important because it builds the ability and confidence of people so that they are able to deal with difficult tasks that may face them (Kouzes and Posner, 2013). Emotional intelligence on the other hand aims at improving the leadership skills of leaders so that they may lead their teams into achieving their goals. The connection between emotional intelligence and training is that they make people acquire more skills that will help them in achieving their goals. This connection helps in informing training and development such that it is effective in making employees better.

Model for Emotionally Intelligent Educators to Address Industry Challenge

            Emotionally intelligent educators can address the challenges faced in education such as poor relationship between instructors and students through creating a model that incorporates emotional intelligence in teaching and training. To begin with, they should ensure that the instructors are taught on how to be emotionally intelligent to help them in their teaching. The students should also be taught emotional intelligence so that as they grow they are able to make clear judgment. In addition, they will also be able to interact with their instructors and peers in a more intelligent manner.


In conclusion, emotional intelligence encompasses many elements, including self-awareness, relationship management, and social awareness. These qualities help in forming leaders that are able to lead their teams in achieving their goals. The education environment, the instructor’s performance and the student instructor relationship is greatly influence by the levels of emotional intelligence in the institution.Therefore, many leaders should try to be emotionally intelligent inorder to foster resonance in the organizations or institutions they work in.
